Thanks in part to a grant from Nature Play Grants Program and also to Yurbay projects, Aeon Academy is set to have our very own bush tucker garden.
Aeon has been eager to introduce a native plant garden for some time now – we love nature play!
Aeon Academy has always held sustainability and environmentally responsible behaviour to be an essential part of our philosophy.
We embed sustainability in the day-to day activities and programming of our Service. We believe in empowering children as active global citizens to learn about and act on our shared responsibilities to the environment.
Our approach to engaging children through sustainability practices has always included recycling, composting, creative reuse of materials, and waste minimisation. In addition, our creative, nature-based programming has enriched children and the wider community for nearly two decades. Children at Aeon Academy are given the opportunity to attend an annual excursion to a thriving local permaculture garden; to collaborate in the creation and maintenance of a herb, vegetable garden & orchard complete with compost bay, active worm farms, and bird bath; and to develop supported relationships with animals through regular excursions and incursions with pets.
The addition of a native plant bush tucker garden as well as an emphasis on building relationships with local Indigenous custodians and teachers is an exciting evolution to Aeon Academy’s integrated approach to learning and the environment.
The garden is being designed and installed by Wiradjuri man Adam Shipp, who will also conduct future bush tucker workshops for Aeon kids and families.
We look forward to inviting one and all to the opening ceremony once the garden has been created later this year!
